Russia and Belarus Controversy

"IPC Values"

When reading these articles I was very shocked about what was happening. When thinking about the Russian invasion on Ukraine and Belarus's assistance with the war, I did not think that this could affect their participation in sports such as the Paralympic Games. After reading the reasons as to why the IPC chose to ban Russia and Belarus from future Paralympic Games, I think it was the most reasonable thing to do in alignment with the IPC values. The governments of Russia and Belarus violated the Olympic Truce, which had a severe effect on the Paralympic Games and the larger Paralympic Movement. The IPC's key values, which include a dedication to political neutrality and impartiality and a belief in the transformative potential of sport, served as the Board's direction in determining what course of action to follow. I think this was the right decision because it aligned with their values. It is a harsh punishment, but it is one that was necessary to remain neutral and follow the rules and regulations that govern the Paralympic Movement. It was also an important decision because governments need to be held accountable for activities that have a direct influence on the Paralympic Movement, the Paralympic Games, and Paralympic athletes.

"NPC's"

I think the Russian and Belarus NPCs should not be removed from participating in future IOC/IPC events. I think as long as the NPCs treat the neutral athletes in these Games just like they would any other competitor. These Paralympic competitors and officials, in contrast to their respective governments, are not the aggressors and they are here to participate in a sporting event like everyone else. I think this would be the most fair option as long as they follow the rules and regulations. If something is broken, then they should be removed. I think at this point, it is too controversial to have disabled sports events being held in Russia and Belarus. This would cause way too many problems and should be avoided at all costs. This is the same for athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus participating in sports events outside of those countries. I think this can put those athletes in danger and it would not align with the IPC values, therefore they should not be allowed.

In conclusion, I think that the IPC has made the right decisions in this unfortunate event. They need to continue to do so and keep upholding their values by thinking about future events and ensuring their athletes’ safety.
